TAS Vampire Killer (MSX) in 19:11 by scrimpeh

This is Testrun of Vampire Killer, or Castlevania's overseas cousin which he only sees every few years or so. It is played with openMSX, which recently has been approved as emulator on tasvideos.org. Go there for more info, it supports frame advance, rerecording and all those thingamajigs.
Vampire Killer itself has a more nonlinear style to it: You have to collect a key in every stage to open the door to continue. There are also other powerups to be found, which can be found in breakable walls, chests and with those merchants. I tend to ignore those, unless it is somehow beneficial to speed.
The game as a whole seems to be put together very haphazardly, even more so than the NES Castlevania, as evidenced by odd whip collision detection, a lot of sprite flickering and other such oddities.
Vampier's run has been the base of my run, though it was not very optimized and some of the weapon choices are questionable. (I stick with most of his choices though). Still, without him, I would have been completely lost, so big props to him.
Stage by stage comments:
Stage 1 - BOSS - Mummies: Check my previous video for those. Otherwise, the video description would be too long.
Stg. 10 - Very boring stage because you have to wait for all these moving platforms. I hit a bat to sail over an abyss too big to jump over.
Stg. 11 - Very straightforward linear stage, nothing to mention, really. I get the axe here because it helps me against Franky.
Stg. 12 - A maze like level with tons of white Dragons. You go through these doors by pushing up + down simultaneously. There is one very unfairly placed White Dragon, so I need to get the invincibility thingy to avoid getting hit.
BOSS - Frankenstein's Monster - A pretty straightforward boss, thanks to the axe. It is however worth looking wether the holy water or perhaps even the whip might be more effective against him.
Stg. 13 - The dungeon level, nothing big to mention. I could get an hourglass which would save quite a bit of time against Death, but I skip on it because I don't have enough hearts. It's worth inquiring wether it would be better to actually do get it.
Stg. 14 - I hate those Axe Armors, they're by far the most annoying enemies. Most of the time, they're too big to jump over because the shield is part of their hitbox. And of course, they do tons of damage, while their axes do hardly any damage.
Stg. 15 - Annoyingly much backtracking here.
BOSS - Death - Freezing him in place with the hourglass could cut down a lot of time, but with tool assistance, even whipping him to death doesn't take excruciatingly long. Nothing big of note here.
Stg. 16 - Fairly straightforward stage, the bats can be manipulated easily.
Stg. 17 - The attentive of you may notice I can get the key much faster than I do, but if I do this, I will be stuck down there with no way to escape but death. Of course, dying makes you lose your keys and reset your hearts, so I have to do tons of tedious backtracking here.
Stg. 18 - You might notice the Cave Music playing here. Those hunchbacks are another pain in the ass because they CAN be manipulated. I just don't know how. In any case, too much backtracking for my liking in here again.
BOSS - Dracula 1 - Getting the dagger helps immensely here, as you can just spam it onto him and his fireballs. I realize I missed a few shots, but whatever, it's just a testrun. Optimizing him involves getting as many hits on him as possible per cycle.
BOSS - Dracula 2 - The far more annoying boss. He spams a ton of bats which you can't really avoid due to your limited moveset. This is why getting the dagger is vital.

Well, I hope you enjoyed this run, as it was pretty fun to make. The run could potentially be sub 19 minutes or more, as it is highly unoptimized, and frankly, not very well planned out. Still, having created the fastest known run of a game feels very, very satisfying.
Special Thanks:
vampier: for creating the original run I used as base. Without him, I would probably not even have bothered with this run.
quibus: for helping me getting openMSX set up properly and giving me a lot of advice. again, without him, this run wouldn't have been made
nitrongenesis: for being cool and also TASing MSX games
the folks at tasvideos.org and its IRC channel: because they are awesome

Also, here are a few RAM adresses I have found. openMSX supports a rudimentary RAM Watch with the ram_watch_add and ram_watch_remove commands:
0xc415 (Health)
0xc425 (Y Pos)
0xc427 (X Pos)
0xc418 (Boss Health)

~ scrimpy
